Spending four hours with Derry is not simply a photography class - it's a full journey from theory to real world practice
You'll start with two hours in the studio learning about light, exposure, aperture and fstops, locking down depth of field in our garden studio.
Then before the sunsets, we'll head to Rosebud Jetty for two hours of practical shooting, where you'll put everything you've just learned into action against one of the best backdrops on the Mornington Peninsula
Small group, maximum 6 students so you get real time guidance from Derry every step of the way, from studio to sunset
Move of AUTO for good and with confidence
Aperture and Fstops, shutter, exposure compensation and focus - not too much to confuse you, but the essentials to make sure you get the photo you see
Light - the most important element to understand in photography
Composition basics - how to frame a shot that draws the eye
Golden Hour photography - how to capture that beautiful but complex light
Bringing it all together - taking what you learned in the studio and applying it confidently in the real world
Your camera
A tripod - essential for this workshop - let me know if you don't have one, I will lend you one
A fully charged battery and spare if you have one - it will be cold and batteries drain quickly, partcularly mirrorless cameras
Comfortable, warm clothing - we'll be outside after dark, so dress for evening temps
Torch or similar so you can see your camera settings
This workshop is perfect for you if you've ever picked up your camera, taken it off Auto and had no idea what to do next - or if you've never even tried moving off AUTO at all.
Whether you're an absolute beginner or you've dabbled but want it to finally click, this session is designed to meet you exactly where you are
In a small group of just 6, you'll get real hands on guidance as we work together to photograph streaking lights and panning shots, so you leave with images you're genuinely proud of and skills you'll use long after the day is done.

With 40 years behind the camera and 17 years teaching others how to see the world through their camera, I've helped thousands of photographers go from 'I just don't get my camera' to capturing images they're genuinely proud of
As the founder of Learn How To Photograph, I've built a community of over 1.4 million people across Instagram, TikTok and Facebook who are learning to slow down, look closer and shoot with confidence, in not only their camera, but themselves
And if you're a bit old school like me and you prefer to learn at a slower, kinder, more gentle pace, without judgement or assuming you already have a level of knowledge, this is for you
I am so looking forward to walking alongside you on your photography journey for a few hours to help you capture the shot you saw
