Looking For Light Photography Workshop

📆 Sunday 16th August 2026

🕚 9-12pm

📍Devilbend Reservoir, Tuerong

🏷️ $297

What You Will Experience

Spending three hours at Devilbend Reservoir with Derry is not about chasing the obvious shot

This is a slower, quieter kind of photography, learning to notice the light most people walk straight past.

We'll wander through the reservoir forest together, looking for the light falling between the shadows, watching how it lands on a single leaf and brings that leaf to life.

You'll learn to track the light as it enters the trees, follow where it lands and find your subject somewhere within its path

This is Derry's favourite workshop to run, because you slow down, and learn to see, really see.

Once you see the small light, a whole new world will open up to you and for you

Small group, maximum 6 students wo you get real time guidance from Derry, every step of the way, as we slow down and really see what's in front of us

What You Will Learn

  • Learn to see light before you see the subject - training your eye to notice it first

  • Metering for shadow and highlight - getting a correct exposure when light and shadwo sit right next to each other

  • How to isolate a single subject using natural light, without it getting lost in the scene

  • Depth of field - using a shallow focus to draw attention to where the light is falling - if you don't know what Depth of Field is, don't worry, I'll teach you

  • Reading direction and quality of light, soft vs harsh and what each brings to a photo

  • Patience and observation

  • Composing around light rather than a subject

What To Bring

  • Your camera

  • Long and short lenses, both or either will work for this workshop

  • A fully charged battery and spare if you have one - it will be cold and batteries drain quickly, partcularly mirrorless cameras

  • Comfy walking shoes, we'll be walking to the forest - less than 300mtrs slight inclination, but we will be walking, slowly, through the forest as we search for light

  • Comfortable, warm clothing - we'll be outside after dark, so dress for evening temps

  • An open mind and willingness to slow down, this workshop is as much about seeing as it is photogrpahing

Is This Workshop

For You?

This workshop is perfect for you if you've ever walked through a beautiful, quiet place with your camera and come away with photos that felt flat, missing the magic you actually saw.

Whether you're an absolute beginner or you've dabbled but want it to finally click, this session is designed to meet you exactly where you are

In a small group of just 6, you'll get real hands on guidance as we work together to photograph streaking lights and panning shots, so you leave with images you're genuinely proud of and a new way of seeing that stays with you long after the morning is over

About Derry

With 40 years behind the camera and 17 years teaching others how to see the world through their camera, I've helped thousands of photographers go from 'I just don't get my camera' to capturing images they're genuinely proud of

As the founder of Learn How To Photograph, I've built a community of over 1.4 million people across Instagram, TikTok and Facebook who are learning to slow down, look closer and shoot with confidence, in not only their camera, but themselves

And if you're a bit old school like me and you prefer to learn at a slower, kinder, more gentle pace, without judgement or assuming you already have a level of knowledge,

this is for you

I am so looking forward to walking alongside you on your photography journey for a few hours to help you capture the shot you saw
