What You Will Experience

Spending four hours exploring Melbourne with Derry is not simply a walk through the city with a camera

This hands on learning experience where you will discover how to see the city differently - finding striking architecture, framing Melbournes iconic laneways, tracking bouncing light on the buildings as we move towards golden hour reading the light and shadow in an urban environment.

As the afternoon turns to evening, we'll make our way to Webb Bridge to capture a (hopefully) beautiful sunset with city skyline as your backdrop

Small group, maximum 6 students so you get real time guidance from Derry every step of the way, from studio to sunset

What You Will Learn

  • How to spot and frame strking architecture, from grand facades to hidden detail

  • Leading lines and symmetry - how Melbourne's laneways and buildings can guide the eye through your photo

  • Best settings for changing light - from bright afternoon streets to golden hour at the bridge

  • How to photograph street art and colour without your shot looking cluttered

  • Composition in tight urban spaces - working with what's around you in a busy city

  • Longe exposure basics, capturing that beautiful glow as the city lights come on

  • Bringing it all together - how to shoot a skyline sunset that actually does the view justice

What To Bring

  • Your camera

  • A versatile lens or lenses - from wide to zoom (if you're not sure drop me an email - [email protected])

  • A tripod - essential for this workshop - let me know if you don't have one, I will lend you one

  • A fully charged battery and spare if you have one - it will be cold and batteries drain quickly, partcularly mirrorless cameras

  • Comfy walking shoes, we'll be walking around the city and standing for all of the workshop

  • Comfortable, warm clothing - we'll be outside after dark, so dress for evening temps

  • Torch or similar so you can see your camera settings

Is This Workshop

For You?

This workshop is perfect for you if you've ever wandered through Melbourne's laneways with your camera and come home with photos that just didn't capture the city's character or if golden hour photos of the city skyline have always felt just out of reach.

Whether you're an absolute beginner or you've dabbled but want it to finally click, this session is designed to meet you exactly where you are

In a small group of just 6, you'll get real hands on guidance as we work together to photograph streaking lights and panning shots, so you leave with images you're genuinely proud of and skills you'll use long after the day is done.

About Derry

With 40 years behind the camera and 17 years teaching others how to see the world through their camera, I've helped thousands of photographers go from 'I just don't get my camera' to capturing images they're genuinely proud of

As the founder of Learn How To Photograph, I've built a community of over 1.4 million people across Instagram, TikTok and Facebook who are learning to slow down, look closer and shoot with confidence, in not only their camera, but themselves

And if you're a bit old school like me and you prefer to learn at a slower, kinder, more gentle pace, without judgement or assuming you already have a level of knowledge, this is for you

I am so looking forward to walking alongside you on your photography journey for a few hours to help you capture the shot you saw
