What You Will Experience

Spending time with Derry at this workshop learning Depth Of Field is not simply about blurring the background and hoping it looks good

This is a hands on learning experience where you will discover how to truly control Depth of Field, moving beyond just changing your fstop to understanding how focal length and your distance to subject shape the blur or sharpness in your images.

You'll learn to read your lens, take real control of your focus and create that much loved bokeh effect intentionally, not by accident

Small group, maximum 6 students wo you get real time guidance from Derry, every step of the way, as we slow down and really see what's in front of us

What You Will Learn

  • Where aperture actually fits in - it's not the only story

  • How focal length affects depth of field - why a zoomed in shot blurs differently to a wide one

  • How distance to your subject changes the blur, even with the same lens and settings

  • Reading your lens, understanding minimum aperture, focal length range and what your specific gear can and can't do

  • Creating intentional bokeh, shaping that background blur rather than leaving it to chance

  • Foreground blur, using it creatively to frame or soften a shot

  • Taking control of focus, moving off auto auto focus and choose exactly what you want to be sharp

  • Understanding that focus and depth of field are two different things

What To Bring

  • Your camera

  • Long and short lenses, both or either will work for this workshop

  • A fully charged battery and spare if you have one

  • Comfy walking shoes, we'll be walking and stopping, it's a slow pace but there won't be opportunity to sit

  • Comfortable clothing

Is This Workshop

For You?

This workshop is perfect for you if you've ever admired a photo with that beautiful blurred professional looking background and wondered how it's done or tried yourself and ended up with everything blurry or nothing at all

This workshop, like all our workshops are designed for the absolute beginner, so it doesn't matter where your knowledge level is, you can do this - here's the thing, creating a shallow depth of field (the blur) is addictive - once you learn it, you'll want to do it again and again

In a small group of just 6, you'll get real hands on guidance as we work together to photograph streaking lights and panning shots, so you leave with images you're genuinely proud of and a new way of seeing that stays with you long after the morning is over

About Derry

With 40 years behind the camera and 17 years teaching others how to see the world through their camera, I've helped thousands of photographers go from 'I just don't get my camera' to capturing images they're genuinely proud of

As the founder of Learn How To Photograph, I've built a community of over 1.4 million people across Instagram, TikTok and Facebook who are learning to slow down, look closer and shoot with confidence, in not only their camera, but themselves

And if you're a bit old school like me and you prefer to learn at a slower, kinder, more gentle pace, without judgement or assuming you already have a level of knowledge, this is for you

I am so looking forward to walking alongside you on your photography journey for a few hours to help you capture the shot you saw
